Since it's an inbuilt software managed by Microsoft, it is usually optimized and updated automatically.

One of the stand-out features of the Windows Defender is the speed. However, Microsoft put much effort to resurrect the software and apparently did a great contribution since Windows Defender is currently ranking as one of the top services. A glimpse at the AV-Test back in 2013, it has been considered dead. Windows Defender has been underrated by default and known as an inferior antivirus system by the community due to its poor past performance. Previously known as Microsoft Security Essentials back in Windows 7, it has been offered as a separate download and has been facing difficulties in competing with the most popular AV brands. Windows Defender is an in-built real-time antivirus program launched with Windows 10 OS. Presumably it can’t run automatically regardless, because the user has to first accept the EULA.To repair damaged system, you have to purchase the licensed version of Reimage Reimage. Regarding the Malicious Software Removal Tool that shows up every month: it requires accepting an EULA. Besides turning on Automatic Updates, obviously.) (If there’s a way to make this happen, please let me know.

Really wish Defender could just update itself by itself without piggybacking on a much more heavyweight system. Oh, and then it makes a System Restore point…just to install definition updates. The definition updates appear in the update list and sit there, and sit, and sit, until I finally go in and manually uncheck all of the other updates, double-check that Defender updates are still checked, double-check that no other updates are checked, and finally hit install. This has always irritated me about Defender utilizing the Windows Update system for its definition files. I’ve never had definition updates for Windows Defender install themselves automatically either (I’m on “Notify me but let me choose what to download” setting).
